Don’t be shy, give a talk at Ignite Waterloo
Posted by Mark Connolly in Speakers' Workshop, Upcoming Events on January 18, 2012
We’ll be announcing the date and other details for our February event very shortly. We’re pretty excited about the great location that we have lined up.
Meanwhile, we’re looking for speakers!
Who can give an Ignite talk? Anyone can! We’ve had an eclectic range of talks over the last two years, and we’ve been thrilled that so many people have been eager to speak. If you haven’t given a talk and want to give it a try, have a look at the details on what we’re looking for, and then apply right now to give a talk! If you’ve applied in the past but haven’t yet given a talk, don’t give up! Apply again to let us know that you’re still interested.
Another speakers workshop
We’re having another speakers workshop! This one is at 7:00pm on Thursday January 26, 2012. As with our most recent workshop, it’s in the boardroom at Barley Works in the Huether Hotel, located at 59 King Street North in Waterloo. Just ask the great staff there to help you find the room if you’re unsure.
Come on out and share your passion!

Ignite Waterloo 8 is coming in February, 2012. We’re well into planning our next event, and hope to announce details on the date and location soon. Of course, if there’s an Ignite event coming, that means that we’re looking for people who are passionate about a topic and who want to share their passion through an Ignite talk.

Doors will open for the event at 6:30pm, and there will be plenty of time for mingling prior to the presentations starting at 7:30. We also have a great contest planned, with some fantastic prizes, so you don’t want to be late! As always, our speakers will be presenting in two groups with an intermission between. Our speaker applications have been looking really great this time around. We can’t wait to hear their presentations in full, and for them to share their passions with you.
Tickets are available now, but they won’t last long. Get them now!

Ignite 7 needs you!
Posted by terre in Apply to Speak, Speakers' Workshop, Upcoming Events on August 30, 2011
Ignite 7 is well on its way to being finalised. The fabulous people who band together to bring you this event are closing in on a date and place as you read this very blog, which is the best news for all of us. We have also settled on dates for speaker workshops. What we are really looking for now are one of the things that make Ignite fly: Speakers.
Everyone has a story. Everyone has either thought or done one thing or another that is pretty darn unique. What is the best? When these people who have these stories come and regale us with them. The most important part, which is true of all geek culture, is that the speaker be speaking passionately about the things that make them passionate!
There really is only one thing left to do here. At this moment, muster all the best parts of your clicking sensibilities and check out this link: Be a Speaker. If you already know you want to speak, you are settled on which one of your many passions you are going to share, go right to the application form. The speaker workshops will be on Tuesday September 6th at 7pm in the Heuther Hotel Boardroom, and Wednesday October 5th at 7pm, also in the Heuther Hotel Boardroom which can be found upstairs at the Barley Works. It is the room with the glass wall. If you can’t find it, the very helpful staff would happily point you in the right direction.

A Beauty Night for Ignite 6
Posted by David Yoon in Ignite Waterloo 6 on June 17, 2011
Whistle Bear played host to our sixth Ignite Waterloo event. Despite competing against game 7 of the Stanley Cup and the LRT vote we had another packed house. Lots of familiar faces out to enjoy the incredible summer evening and the expansive patio, not to mention the stacked selection of awesome talks.
The speakers killed it. What many people don’t realize is what a huge act of faith this event is. We don’t vette the speakers before they appear on stage, we’re hearing them for the first time along with the rest of the audience. Many haven’t spoken in front of a crowd since grade school and Ignite provides them the opportunity to overcome their fears and face a friendly crowd.
Thanks again to our sponsors Kik, OpenText, Communitech, Schlueter, The Guelph Technology and Design Cluster and Words Worth Books who made it possible for us to have guests brought in from Waterloo via bus, give away an iPad2, Wildcraft certificates and books to our contest winners, not to mention securing the beautiful venue. Thanks as well to Jacqui Murphy and Art Allies for coming out and showcasing some incredible local talent.
As always we can’t thank Philip Bast enough for consistently being there and video taping the event. Look for each of the speaker videos to be up in the coming weeks. With a new venue comes new challenges and we couldn’t be more grateful to Jonathan Fritz who managed all the intricacies of the new space and took care of our AV needs. Some of you may have also noticed the cool speaker and event organizer nametags thanks to Sean Yo and his fun itweet.as app.
The internets is trickling in with some great shots and recaps as well.

Our Speakers for Ignite 6

I’m excited to announce we’ve got our line up for Ignite 6. It’s always a treat getting the slide decks in for consolidation. That’s all we have to go on as we try to set up the flow for the evening. It’s an inexact science at best and we’re just as excited as you to hear the presentations for the first time the night of. As with all things the list is subject to change.

Shuttle information for Ignite Waterloo 6
Posted by Melanie Baker in Ignite Waterloo 6, Organizing, Upcoming Events on May 30, 2011
As we’ve mentioned before, in organizing Ignite events it’s been important to us that the venues be easily accessible by public transit. That was easy when events took place in downtown Kitchener, but with Ignite Waterloo 6 taking place outside of Cambridge at Whistle Bear Golf Club, it posed a transit issue.
We’re happy to announce that with the support of our excellent sponsors, we’ve been able to arrange for our own transit to the event, and will have a shuttle making stops in Waterloo and Kitchener.
On June 15th we’ll have our own GRT shuttle bus running out to Whistle Bear and back at the end of the evening. The bus will display “Charter” and have Ignite signs. Please note that the shuttle will not be making any individually requested stops.
The pick up/drop off schedule will work as follows:
Going to the Event
5:30pm: Shuttle departs from University of Waterloo at the Davis Centre Library (facing south: DC on the map).
5:45pm (approximately): Shuttle arrives at at the Clock Tower entrance to Victoria Park at Joseph and Gaukel Streets in Kitchener (facing south).
6:00pm: Shuttle departs from the Joseph Street stop to head to Whistle Bear.
6:30pm (approximately): Shuttle arrives at Whistle Bear.
Coming Home from the Event
10:30pm: Bus will be ready to depart. (Bus will wait if event runs long, and depart asap afterward once riders have boarded.)
11:00pm (approximately): Stop at the Clock Tower entrance to Victoria Park on Joseph St. in Kitchener.
11:15pm (approximately): Stop at University of Waterloo at the Davis Centre Library.
Tickets are now on sale for Ignite Waterloo 6

We’re just about ready to go, and the next key ingredient to make Ignite Waterloo 6 on June 15th a success is… you!
As for the last event, tickets are $5 each, and help us cover the costs of venue, A/V, prizes, shuttles, etc. There is also a Supporter ticket available for $50, and, as always, we’re immensely grateful to the folks who purchase those tickets.
We’ve had an issue with bums vs. seats in the past, and we particularly apologize to our sponsors and supporters when seats weren’t available. We’re making sure this time that there are seats for everyone, no matter when you arrive.
We’ve also got a really cool contest and fantastic prizes in the works. You don’t want to miss this event!
As we’ve mentioned, Ignite Waterloo 6 is taking place in a new location outside of downtown Kitchener at Whistle Bear Golf Club. We’re thrilled to be working with the folks at Whistle Bear, and to have a bigger venue to accommodate plenty more Ignite fans! And, as noted, for those who don’t have vehicles, we will be running a shuttle to/from KW. More info to come about that.
Our second speakers workshop is tonight, Tuesday, May 17th, at 7pm at the Barley Works (upstairs at the Huether) in Waterloo. If you’re interested in speaking, we think attending really is invaluable.
We’re holding our speaker selection meeting in a couple of days, and are a bit overwhelmed at the amazing list of applications we’ve received to date. Final selection is not going to be easy. You do still have some time to apply if you’re interested, so get your application in today!
