What’s Ignite Waterloo?

Begun in the US by a couple of O’Reilly staff in 2006, Ignite events have rapidly become a global phenomenon. Inaugurated in Waterloo Region in October, 2009, Ignite is high energy and community-driven events run by volunteers that capture the best of Waterloo Region’s geek culture.

The Ignite schedule kicks off with time to socialize, and usually a geeky contest like LEGO building or paper airplane-making. Then we get into the presentations, in two sections, which include up to 20 volunteer speakers delivering five-minute, slide-supported talks about a personal passion or idea. The range of topics is diverse, the pace is relentless (slides auto-advance every 15 seconds), and there is always plenty of laughter and food for thought.

Who attends?

People who come to Ignite Waterloo vary from high school and university students to artists, professionals, entrepreneurs, and others. The first Ignite Waterloo event was attended by over 120 people. Since then we’ve consistently sold out and had a waiting list, and this year we expect 300 community-minded attendees at the events.
